EnTech: Uber self-driving cars hit the roads, Johnny Cabs may one day be a thing

Uber self-driving cars hit the roads, Johnny Cabs may one day be a thing

Uber had previously stated its intention to develop autonomous vechicles, basing itself in Pittburgh. Those cars are now hitting the roads.
Uber located its Uber Advanced Technologies Center in the Pennsylvania city, with the aim of one day of having autonomous taxis.
Talking to Pittsburgh Business Times, a spokesperson from Uber said: "This vehicle is part of our early research efforts regarding mapping, safety and autonomy systems."Â
The news comes not long after the announcement that Google's self-driving cars will soon be venturing further afield on Californian roads.Â
Car manufacturers - like Audi - have already demonstrated that the technical aspects of autonomous cars can be easily surmounted now, but there's still a long road ahead when it comes to ensuring a failsafe system, and getting all the legislation in place.
Autonomy itself is only one aspect of Uber's plans however. For a taxi system, the level of trust between passenger and the machine is going to need to be high.Â
Let's hope that future autonomous taxis work better than Total Recall's Johnny Cabs.
