To support 4K @ 60Hz, at a minimum, you need DisplayPort 1.2 which all Thunderbolt 2 Macs and Retina MacBook support. You also need GPU support, which is any dedicated GPU (Retina iMac, 2013 Mac Pro, 2013+ 15â³ rMBP *note, Iris Pro vs of 15â³ rMBP doesnât count) *or* Iris 6000 and up (2015 rMBP, 2015 MBA).
To support 5K @ 60Hz, you need either dual DisplayPort 1.2 ports (2013 Mac Pro, Retina iMac, oddly laptops donât make the cut). or DisplayPort 1.3 coming with Thunderbolt 3, which is Skylake (Intel says Q4 2015, I say Q1-Q2 2016 so Broadwell isnât a total flop).
USB Type-C in 2015 MacBook is only DisplayPort 1.2 and chip is only Broadwell, so it will never see 5K support. If anything, since we know 15â³ MacBook Pro sells is far larger numbers than Mac Pro, Appleâs likely waiting under TB3 to update it so itâs a single-cable solution, I donât expect the 13â³ MBP with integrated graphics to actually be able to handle it, 5K is a LOT of pixels to draw.
